Illustrator, engraver, and publisher. Born in Liège. Apprenticed as a goldsmith in Liège, but relocated to Strasbourg due to his Reformed religious beliefs. Married Katharina Esslinger in 1560 and, for the second time, Katharina Rötlinger in 1570. Influenced by Huguenot engraver, Etienne Delaune, moved to Antwerp following the Pacification of Ghent in 1576. Eventually settled in Frankfurt in 1588, where, with the collaboration of his sons, Johan Theodor and Johan Israel, established a publishing house known for series like India Occidentalis (1590–1634) and India Orientalis (1597–1628), which featured travel narratives and engravings based on works by John White and Jacques Le Moyne.
