Born Charlotte Hawkins (later adopting the surname Dempster, her mother’s maiden name), at Dunnichen House, Forfar, and spent her childhood in Skibo Castle, Sutherland. Lived for periods in Paris, and moved to Cannes with her sister in 1880. Converted to Catholicism in 1901. Never married. Publications include the popular novel Véra (1871).
