Jewish poet, Hebrew scholar, orientalist, and librarian. Born in Neisse, Prussian Silesia, and educated in Berlin before joining the British Museum Library as an assistant in 1855. Wrote prolifically for British periodicals including Quarterly Review and The Times. Travelled to Egypt, Lebanon, and Palestine in 1869.
