Dramatist and poet. Born in Madrid. Studied in Alcalá de Henares and Salamanca. Sailed with the Spanish navy to the Azores in the service of the marquis of Santa Cruz (1583). Exiled from Madrid because of his writing (1587-1591). Married twice, Isabel de Urbina and Juana de Guardo. Ordained as a priest in 1614.
