Poet, translator, lawyer, statesman. Born in Camberwell, Surrey. Educated at St. John’s College, Cambridge, but did not take his degree. From 1833 to 1835 travelled to North America and the West Indies, returning to enter the Middle Temple in 1835. Friends with Robert Browning. Emigrated to New Zealand in April 1842, where he led a prominent political and public administrative career (including serving as Prime Minister). Returned to England in 1871. Poetry volumes include Poems (1833), Venice (1839), Flotsam and Jetsam: Rhymes Old and New (1877), Ranolf and Amohia: A South-Sea Day-Dream (1872). Biographical information: ODNB, BL. (AC)
