Major metaphysical poet, Church of England clergyman, soldier, and diplomat. Educated at Hart Hall, Oxford, and Lincoln’s Inn. Joined Essex’s expedition to Cadiz (1597). Married Ann More in December 1601. Became an MP for Brackley, Northamptonshire in 1601 and Taunton in 1614. Ordained in 1615 and became royal chaplain to James I. Ambassador to the Holy Roman Empire in 1619 and dean of St. Paul’s (1621-31). Author of Pseudo-Martyr (1610), An Hymne to the Saints, and to Marquesse Hamylton (1625), Holy Sonnets (1633), Biathanatos (1647), and Essays in Divinity (1651). Biographical information: ODNB. (CC)
