Poet, painter, and illustrator. Born in Dundee, Scotland. Educated at the Dundee School of Art at age eleven. Studied painting in Antwerp and Düsseldorf. Married Christine Allen (b.1885) in 1912. Became a key figure in the Celtic revival. Influenced the Colourist Movement in Scotland. Elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1910 and produced works including The Adoration of the Magi and various murals.
