Educated in France, where he became fluent in French. Contributed to Pasquin, Puppet Show, Punch, and Pall Mall Gazette. Collaborated with Robert Barnabas Brough on a theatrical production. Journalist in Paris (1852). Correspondent in Russia for the Illustrated Times. Married Margaret Watson on 2 February 1857. Returned to England in 1861.
