Collaborated with Robert Barnabas Brough on a theatrical production. Journalist in Paris (1852). Correspondent in Russia for the Illustrated Times. Married Margaret Watson on 2 February 1857. Returned to England in 1861. Correspondent in Poland (1862-1863), Luxembourg (1867), and covered the Franco-Prussian War. Editor of the Graphic (1869). Founded the magazine Portrait in 1877.
