Poet and bar-iron merchant. Known as the Corn Law Rhymer. Born in Rotherham, Yorkshire. Married Frances (Fanny) Gartside in 1805. Advocate for the improvement of the working class including founding the Sheffield Anti-Corn Law Society, opposed the “bread tax,” and supported Chartism for a brief time.
