Poet, journalist, editor, artist, and lawyer. Educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Secretary of the Indian Reform Association (1855-1857), and then manager of glassworks in Birmingham (1857-1867). Married Elizabeth Goldney on 6 April 1858. Editor of Conservative newspaper Birmingham Daily Gazette (1867-1870, 1886-), and co-founded and edited The People in 1878. Began practising law in 1873.
