Hymn writer, theologian, poet, and translator. Educated at University College, Oxford. Ordained in the Church of England in 1839, but converted to Catholicism in 1845 and became a Catholic priest in 1847. Travelled extensively throughout the continent. Friends with William Wordsworth, John Manners, and John Henry Newman. Dedicated Sights and Thoughts in Foreign Churches and among Foreign Peoples (1842) to Wordsworth.
