Illustrator, wood engraver, and painter. Born in Richmond, Surrey. Worked as an apprentice in the Dalziel Brothers’ engraving firm. Moved to America in 1856/1857. Studied at the Graham Art School in Brooklyn. Married Marian Thompson in 1862. Exhibited at the American Watercolour Society. Specialized in landscapes. Contributed to Harper’s Monthly, Harper’s Weekly, Century, and St. Nicholas. Illustrator of the Picturesque America series (and its successors Picturesque Europe, and Picturesque Palestine, Sinai, and Egypt) for Appleton’s Journal. Biographical information: DLB. (CC)
