Major poet, novelist, critic, dramatist, revolutionary, and soldier. Served with the French in Northern Italy during the Napoleonic Wars. Afterwards went into exile in Switzerland, then London. Contributed to the Edinburgh Review, the Quarterly Review, and the New Monthly Magazine.
