Watercolourist, painter, illustrator, draughtsman, and engraver. Born in North Shields, Northumberland, to a Quaker family. Worked as an engraver for the Illustrated London News. Travelled to Germany, Switzerland, and Austria in 1852. Contributed to Henry Vizetelly’s Christmas with the Poets (1851), which was displayed at the 1851 Great Exhibition. Illustrator for many prominent poets including Sir Walter Scott and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Travelled around Scotland, Wales, and the Lake Country to produce illustrations for a series Picturesque Guides. Married twice, Anne Spence on 13 August 1850 and Frances Watson (sister of John Dawson Watson) on 25 August 1864. Became a member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1862. Visited Italy several times (1866-1876). Travelled to France, Spain, and Italy in 1887. Elected honorary member of the Royal Berlin Academy in 1874. Biographical information: Wood 161, ODNB.
