Translator and poet. Daughter of Sir Henry Bartle Edward Frere. Born in Gloucestershire. Educated privately. Lived in Bombay, India (1863-1867), where he father was the colonial governor, and travelled with him around the Maratha territories (1865-1866). Transcribed many fairy tale stories told to her by her ayah and published as Old Deacon Days (1868). Moved to South Africa in 1877 for her father’s next appointment. Returned to England in 1880.
