Married twice: Charlotte Grenfell on 3 October 1849 and Henrietta Elizabeth Warre on 12 September 1861. Biographer of Thomas Carlyle. Editor of Fraser’s Magazine (1860-1874). Travelled extensively, including to southern Africa, Norway, Australian colonies, New Zealand, and the West Indies. Member of the Athenaeum Club and original member of the Breakfast Club.
