Illustrator, engraver, and publisher. Born in Haarlem. Likely trained in Antwerp under Hieronymus Cock. Travelled extensively across the southern Netherlands, France, Germany, and Italy (1560–61) to expand his network. Settled in Antwerp in 1564, became a citizen and master in the Guild of St. Luke in 1571, and later its dean (1585-87). His style influenced by Maarten van Heemskerck, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and Marten de Vos. Mentored H. van Doort, Jean-Baptiste Barbé, and Peter Backereel, and collaborated with the Wierix brothers and Hendrick Goltzius. Biographical information: Grove. (NM)
