Biographer, art critic, and poet. Educated at University College School, but left at sixteen to study law. Called to the bar in 1849, but never practised as a barrister. Married essayist and biographer Anne Burrows on 4 February 1851. Friends with Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Wrote a major biography of Blake, which his wife published in 1863.
