Poet, playwright, and actor. Born in Lillebonne, Seine-Maritime, Normandy, France. Left home at the age of 15 to become an actor. Moved to Paris in 1858 to pursue writing. Spent his time divided between Normandy and Paris. Contributed to Le Boulevard. Wrote his own plays as well as adaptations from Shakespeare.
