Poet, children’s author, and teacher. Born in Massachusetts. Sister of Dora Reade Goodale. Co-authored poetry with her younger sister from a young age, including contributions to St. Nicholas and the volume of poetry Apple Blossoms: Verses of Two Children (1878). Employed as a teacher in the Indian department at the Hampton Institute in Virginia. Contributed to the school newspaper Southern Workman and developed an interest in American Indigenous peoples. Travelled through the Sioux reservation, Dakota territory (1885). Government teacher, then superintendent, in schools in the Dakota Territory (1886-1890). Married Dr. Charles Alexander Eastman, a Sioux member, in 1891. Edited her husband’s memoir Indian Boyhood (1902). Biographical information: ANB. (CC)
