Poet, dramatist, editor, prominent suffragist and labour activist, pacifist. Born in County Sligo to a Protestant Anglo-Irish family, but she supported Irish nationalism. Educated by governesses. Friends with W. B. Yeats. Companion of the working-class suffragist Esther Roper, whom she met in Italy, and they lived together in Manchester from c. 1897 (biographers disagree as to whether they were in a lesbian relationship).
