Poet, clergyman, and professor. Born in Wyoming, Pennsylvania, but moved to New York with his family at the age of 2. Educated at Columbia College and the General Seminary of the Protestant Episcopal Church. Ordained a deacon in 1826. Travelled to France, Netherlands, England, Scotland, Switzerland, and Italy (1828-1830). Returned to the United States and became a professor of history and composition at Columbia College.
