Army officer, MP, and poet. Educated at Westminster School. Joined the armed forces
in 1779. Served in Flanders, Holland, England, and Denmark. Became a general in 1819
and a field marshal in 1846. MP for Chester, Cheshire (1795-1825), and Stockbridge,
Hampshire (1825-1830). Married twice, Elizabeth Heathcote on 6 April 1797 and Anne
