Translator and linguist. Multi-lingual; learned to speak Hottentot (Nama) in his childhood. Educated at the University of Halle, Germany. Returned to South Africa. Married Marianne Ester de la Roche Smuts. Moved to Keetmanshoop, in modern-day Namibia, in 1871 and explored other parts of the territory, but was forced to leave in 1878 due to tensions with the locals. Biographical information: W.
