Poet and medical doctor. Alternative signature: Thos. Gordon Hake. Born in Leeds and son of Thomas Bedford Hake. His mother was the daughter of Captain William Augustus Gordon. Educated at Christ’s Hospital and later in Edinburgh and Glasgow, he pursued a medical career, earning his degree in 1831. Following some time in Italy, he became a physician in Brighton, where he married Lucy Bush in 1837. An acquaintance of George Borrow and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. His poetry, largely written after age fifty, include The World’s Epitaph (1866), Parables and Tales (1872), and Maiden Ecstasy(1880). Biographical information: ODNB. (NM)
