Miles O’Reilly.Born in Oldcastle, Ireland. Son of Rev. Nicholas John Halpin and Anne (née Grehan). Educated at Trinity College, Dublin. Emigrated to America in 1851. Worked as private secretary to P. T. Barnum, and edited and wrote for multiple newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times. Lived in Washington. Served as a lieutenant and major during the American civil war, where he formed his pseudonymous identity. Publications include two volumes of poetry published pseudonymously, and one before the war, Lyrics by the Letter ‘H’ (1854). Biographical information: DIB. (BGL)
