Army officer, editor, professor, and military writer. Pseudonym: E. B. H. Born in Bodmin, Cornwall. Educated at the Royal Military Academy and became a lieutenant in 1843. Served in Ireland, Canada, England, Gibraltar, the Crimean War, Bulgaria, Armenia, Greece and Egypt. Contributed to Fraser’s Magazine and Blackwood’s Magazine. Editor of Tales from Blackwood (1858). Professor of military history (1859-1865), then commandant (1870-1877) at Staff College. Appointed general in 1890. Made Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (1880) and Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (1882). Conservative MP for Birkenhead (1885-1892).
