Illustrator. Born in Sheffield, Yorks. Mentored by his father, T. B. Hardy (1842–97), and later educated at the Academy in Düsseldorf, London, and Paris. Exhibited at the Royal Academy (1884-1922), creating oil paintings that ranged from Orientalist themes and scenes of everyday life in Brittany to socially conscious works as in Sans Asile (1888), which portrays homeless figures sleeping in Trafalgar Square. Influenced by French graphic styles, particularly the work of Jules Chéret, he became best known for his graphic art. Created the Gaiety Girl series of posters in the 1890s and produced numerous posters for the Savoy Theatre, including those advertising D’Oyly Carte operas. Biographical information: Grove. (NM)
