Poet, linguist, and classical scholar. Alternative signature: J. E. Harrison. Educated at Newnham College, Cambridge. Studied archaeology at the British Museum under the direction of Sir Charles Newton. Made several trips to Italy and Germany. Elected to a research fellowship at Newnham College in 1898.
