C. Napier Hemy.Influenced early on by William Bell Scott, Headmaster of the Government School of Design in Newcastle. Embraced a Pre-Raphaelite style by the mid-1860s, seen in his early work Among the Shingle at Clovelly (1864). Influenced by William Morris and George Pinwell, and studied under Baron Henry Leys in Antwerp (1867-1869), where he created religious pieces. Later in his career, he often focused on maritime subjects, including fishing boats and yachts. Elected Associate Royal Academician in 1898 and Royal Academician in 1910.
