Poet, novelist, essayist, and physician. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Educated at Harvard College, Boston Medical College, and Harvard Medical School. Contributed to the Daily Advertiser and New England Magazine. Editor of Atlantic Monthly. Moved to Paris to continue his medical studies, and travelled around the European continent. Professor of anatomy at Dartmouth College (1838-1840), and then Dean of Harvard Medical School (1847-1853). Married Amelia Lee Jackson in 1840. Author of several poetry volumes.
