Poet and nonconformist. Born in London. Educated at New College, Oxford. Ordained in 1884 and became minister in a new church in Hampstead that same year, a position he held for 46 years. Became chairman Congregational Union of England and Wales in 1903 and president of the National Free Church Council in 1905. Married (Isabel) Violet Basden on 4 April 1918.
