Poet and classical scholar. Brother of Laurence Housman. Educated at St. John’s College,
Oxford. Entered the civil service while also studying in classical literature in the
British Museum Reading Room, and published periodical essays on the classics and textual
criticism. Became chair of Latin in University College, London, in 1892. moving to
