Served in the military from around 1907 to 1920, including the Indian Medical Service in Calcutta, West Bengal, India (in 1912). Author of Many Camps: Sketches of Indian Life (1912) and The Gunrunner and Other Ballads (1912). Chambers’s Journal ledger entry for Howlett’s The Owl, published on 26 January 1901, lists the address as 38 Silver St, Bury, Lancashire (NLS Dep 341/371).
