Genre and portrait painter. Studied art under Samuel Drummond and exhibited at the Royal Academy for the first time in 1831. In 1841, Joy was commissioned by Queen Victoria paint portraits of the young Prince of Wales and the Princess Royal as well as portraits of the Queen’s dogs. His daughter Mary Eliza Haweis (1848–98) became a portrait painter, writer, and illustrator. Biographical information: ODNB. (SP)
