Lectured on literature at the Leeds mechanics institute he co-founded. Married Rachel Wilkinson on 3 June 1856. Drama critic for the Literary Gazette (1861-1869), The Athenaeum (1869-1907), Sunday Times, The Globe, and the Daily Graphic (1894-1906). Contributed to Le Livre and Gentleman’s Magazine. Literature reviewer for The Athenaeum. Editor of Notes and Queries (1883-1907). Member of the Arundel Club and Garrick Club. Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Friends with Alfred Austin.
