Married twice, Jane Emma Borradaile in 1860 and Isabel Mary Hewlett in February 1865. Original member of the Metaphysical Society (1869-1881). Became a fellow at the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1870. Editor of the Contemporary Review (1870-1877). Founding editor of The Nineteenth Century in 1877.
