Poet, humorist, and journalist. Born in Philadelphia to wealthy parents. Educated at the College of New Jersey in 1845. Studied abroad for three years at the Universities of Heidelberg, Munich, and the Sorbonne. Wrote art and drama criticism for the Drawing-Room Journal as well as reviews of foreign literature. Editor of Illustrated News, Evening Bulletin, Graham’s Magazine, and Appleton’s Cyclopaedia. Editor of Vanity Fair (1860-61), and Continental Magazine during the Civil War. Married Isabel Fisher in 1856. Left America in 1870 and lived in London and Italy for many years. Author of several volumes of poetry including Meister Karl’s Sketch-Book (1855), The Breitmann Ballads (1871), The Music-Lesson of Confucius (1872), and Pidgin-English Sing-Song (1876).
