John Smith of Smith Hall, gent.Born in St. Petersburg, Russia. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and Lincoln’s Inn. Married Teresa Clarke-Jervoise on 6 January 1868. Liberal MP for Devonport, Devon (1868-1874). Became a Justice of the Peace for for Devon and Hampshire and served as a lieutenant in the Pembrokeshire artillery militia. Author of Sketches of Cantabs (1849), Across the Atlantic (1851), and Science and Revelation (1871). Translator of the works of Juvenal and Pliny in D. J.
