Poet, novelist, and translator. Born in Birmingham to a Quaker family. Educated at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Married Sophia Pemberton on 24 April 1799. Author of the epistolary novel Edmund Oliver (1789) and several volumes of poetry including Desultory Thoughts in London (1821). Translator of Metamorphoses by Ovid and several plays by Vittorio Alfieri. Close friends with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and their circle. Biographical information: ODNB. (CC)
