Cavalier poet and army officer. Son of Sir William Lovelace, a career soldier, and Anne Barnes. Educated at Charterhouse School before enrolling at Gloucester Hall, Oxford, in 1634. While an active Royalist, he did not participate in the English Civil War, but supported the Royalist cause financially. Travelled to the Netherlands and possibly France, serving in military campaigns. Returning to England in 1647, joined a literary circle that included Thomas Stanley. His poetry collection include Lucasta (1649). Died in poverty in London. Biographical information: ODNB. (NM)
