J. R. Lowell.Educated at Harvard University. Abandoned a brief legal career to become a writer, and began to publish prolifically in American magazines. Married the poet Maria White (Maria White Lowell) Lowell in 1844 and, following her death, married Frances Dunlap in 1857. Co-founded the magazine Pioneer with Robert Carter in 1843, editor of the Atlantic Monthly from 1857 to 1861, and was co-editor with Charles Eliot Norton of the Northern American Review from 1864 to 1868. Became professor of modern literature in Harvard in 1856. Poetry volumes include A Year’s Life (1841), Poems (1844), Vision of Sir Launfal (1848), The Cathedral (1870). Biographical information: ANB.
