L.Born in Bingham, Nottinghamshire. Educated at University College, Oxford, and Lincoln’s Inn. Married twice, Georgiana Orred on 29 March 1836 and Caroline Anne Sneyd on 3 February 1885. Immigrated to Australia in 1842 and became involved in politics. Contributed to The Atlas. Returned to England in 1850. Writer for The Times. Elected MP for Kidderminster (1852-1859) and Calne (1859-1868). Opposed the second Reform Bill in 1866. Appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1868. Fellow of the Royal Society.
