Educated at the University of Michigan. Studied at the Pennsylvania Academy. Moved to New York City in 1877. Illustrator for Scribner’s Magazine, St Nicholas, Harper’s Bazaar, McClure’s, and The Outlook. Travelled to Antwerp and Paris (1882-1884). Attended the Académie Julian. Married Henrietta Whipple in 1898. ​Travelled to London (1899) and Egypt and Sudan (1900). Moved to Santa Barbara, California in 1906. Member of the American Federation of the Arts.
