Poet, historian, essayist, Whig politician. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and Lincoln’s Inn. Contributed to the Edinburgh Review. MP for Calne, Wiltshire (1830-1832), Leeds (1834), and Edinburgh (1839-1848, 1852-1856). Accepted a government position in India (1834-1838). Travelled in Italy and France (1838-1839), Ireland (1849), and Scotland (1850). Author of History of England (4 vols. 1848-1855). Made Baron of Rothley in 1857. Biographical information: ODNB.
