Poet and translator. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin. Called to the bar in 1846. Through his friendship with The Nation writers, became involved in the Young Ireland movement. Appointed to a professorship in English Literature at the Catholic University, Dublin, in 1853, but resigned after a few months. Travelled extensively throughout Europe before eventually settling in London in 1871. Contributed to the Dublin Satirist, The Nation, and the Irish Monthly. Poetry volumes include Ballads, Poems, Lyrics Original and Translated (1850), ’The Bell-Founder’ and Other Poems (1857), and ’Underglimpses’ and Other Poems (1857). Biographical information: ODNB.
