Canadensis.Held imperialist and nationalist views. Born in Kingston, Upper Canada, to a Scottish minister who had emigrated in 1827 and who educated his daughter at home. Prolific writer and well connected to other Canadian writers and artists, as well as politicians such as John A. Macdonald and Richard John Cartwright. Lived in Kingston and kept a summer home at Ferncliff, near the Thousand Islands, where many prominent Canadian and international figures visited her. Biographical information: DCB. (AC)
