Gaelic poetry collector and translator. Born in Gairloch, Ross-shire. Worked as a joiner until suffering an accident, when he devoted all his time to collecting Gaelic poetry. Moved to Glasgow in 1836 to work as a printing clerk at the University of Glasgow, and then to Edinburgh to work for a bookseller and publisher. Prolific writer, editor, and translator, including the collection Sar-obair nam Bard Gaelach, or, The Beauties of Gaelic Poetry (1841). (AC)
