Poet, Gaelic poetry collector, and the purported translator of the Gaelic poet Ossian, although Macpherson is now understood to have authored the poems himself. Born in Ruthven, Badenoch, a Gaelic community. Studied at King’s College, Aberdeen, and probably also at the University of Edinburgh. Publications include Fragments of Ancient Poetry Collected in the Highlands of Scotland (1760), Fingal (1761), The Works of Ossian (1765). Biographical information: ODNB. (AC)
