Poet. Born in Dublin. Son of Frederick Maning and Mary (née Barrett). Lived in Hokianga harbour, New Zealand. Worked as a variety of roles operating trading establishments to integrate with Maori society until he was able to buy land. Upon retiring from business, Maning was appointed as a judge on the Maori land court. Married a Maori woman, Moengaroa, in 1839. Author of several texts about New Zealand and the Maori, most notably the partially autobiographical Old New Zealand (1863). Biographical information: ODNB. (BGL)
